How to moisturize dry hair at home?

Hydration is the foundation of hair and skin care, as water is the source of life and beauty.

The problem of dry hair is familiar to every girl, because even healthy hair sometimes becomes dry, under the influence of the sun, wind or frost. In healthy hair, water makes up about 10% of the hair composition. And each of us, ideally, should maintain this minimum level of hydration, because it is necessary to maintain the health of both the external and internal structure of the hair.

Why does hair lose moisture and become dry?

Excessive loss of water in the hair is usually due to a lack of sebum produced by the sebaceous glands on the scalp. The small layer of fat surrounding the hair shaft plays a key role - it insulates against harmful factors and, above all, prevents water loss. Violation of the lipid membrane or its removal leads to faster evaporation of water.

A deficiency of ceramides in the stratum corneum can also cause dry hair. These chemical compounds form a non-porous coating that traps water in the scalp. At the same time, it provides elasticity and maintains the desired temperature. If ceramides are weak due to not delivering the right amount of UFA (unsaturated fatty acids), we fight dry hair.

The moisture level of the hair and scalp is constantly changing, it depends on many factors, including the season. Very dry hair is much more common in winter (when temperatures drop, humidity outside and dryness inside the air increases) or in summer (due to harmful sunlight and higher temperatures).

The main causes of dry hair

  • Unbalanced diet
  • Inappropriate home hair care
  • Frequent hair styling with a hairdryer (iron, curling iron)
  • Using shampoos with strong detergents
  • Exposure of hair to sun, wind, cold, sea water and chlorinated

Some people have naturally dry hair. In such cases, the strands dry naturally because the skin cannot deliver the protective amount of sebum. In this case, dry hair is not damage.

Naturally dry hair is usually frizzy and needs moisturizing, gentle care.

Dry hair is often accompanied by other problems: dry and damaged hair, dry and coarse hair, dry and thinning hair, dry and dull hair, dry and brittle hair, and so on.

How to moisturize dry hair

Dry hair care at home

Dry hair care should be based on a balance of emollients and moisturizers, not just water. This is the only way to restore vitality and beautiful appearance to hair.

  1. Intensely moisturizing products. Choose foods rich in moisturizers, the most popular moisturizers in cosmetics include hyaluronic acid, aloe, panthenol (provitamin B5), glycerin, sodium lactate. The best mask for dry hair contains at least one of the listed substances at the top of the ingredient list, which means there is enough of this substance in the mask.
  2. Natural emollients. If you are delivering the right amount of water, you must fix it. Use emollient masks or natural oils. Natural ingredients such as oils: argan oil, macadamia oil, coconut oil, olive oil or avocado oil. Dry hair does not like proteins, for example, masks and conditioners with proteins (keratin, silk, collagen, wheat or eggs) only work when you are wondering how to restore dry hair - when the strands are dry and damaged.
  3. Cleansing dry hair. Dry hair is fragile and should be handled with care. Do not tear, pull or rub during or after washing.Wrapping wet hair with a towel is not a good idea as it can waste too much water and nutrients. A good shampoo for dry hair does not contain strong detergents (SLS or SLES) and contains only natural and mild detergents. Water, especially hard water, and together with detergents can dehydrate, so do not wash dry hair too often. Two or three times a week is sufficient if your scalp is not oily. On days when you don't wash your hair, moisturize with lotions or light hair oils.
  4. Homemade masks for dry hair. Do-it-yourself dry hair mask is an ideal option for additional care for dry hair, especially if it is filled with oils and moisturizers. Use a natural base oil as a mask base.
