Porous hair: causes and care at home

Many girls know firsthand what porous hair is. Therefore, we decided to understand in more detail about the causes of porosity of hair, how to choose the right care for them and how to improve their condition at home.

Porous hair absorbs water and nutrients like a sponge. However, this does not mean that they are easy to maintain, because how quickly they absorb is how quickly they release.

High porosity hair is incredibly weak, brittle and dry, sometimes even coarse. The hair cuticle is raised and wide open, so there is nothing that can protect the internal structures of the hair from toxins, temperature and corrosive substances coming from inappropriate hair care products.

Porous hair: causes and care at home

Why does hair become porous?

  • Frequent coloring, discoloration, perm.
  • Incorrectly selected care.
  • Using an iron, curling iron and other stylers.
  • Harmful effects of the sun, frost.
  • Salt and chlorinated water, hard tap water that you use to wash your hair.
  • Tight hairstyles, tight elastic bands and metal hairpins.
  • Sometimes porosity can be inherited.
  • Chronic illnesses and strong medications.

Undoubtedly, in the care of porous hair, you need to constantly monitor so as not to expose the hair to factors that can damage the already weakened hair structure.

Care for porous hair

Hair care is about more than washing, brushing and styling. Hair care is a targeted action aimed at nourishing, repairing and strengthening, especially when it comes to porous hair.

The main rule in the care of porous hair is care! Porous hair is very sensitive to external factors.

  1. Maintain hair from the inside out, prevent nutritional deficiencies. Porous hair needs a huge amount of proteins, vitamins: A, E, B5, B7, minerals (zinc, copper, silicon) and amino acids.
  2. When choosing home care, give preference to products that do not contain destructive detergents and substances that can deteriorate the hair structure.
  3. Do not expose your hair to chemicals that damage the condition of the hair: bleaching and dyeing will negatively affect the condition of the hair.
  4. Use protective products, sprays, serums for porous hair. They are light and at the same time full of active substances that make the hair stronger and protected from aggressive external factors.
  5. If possible, reduce the use of a hair dryer and let your hair dry naturally. However, if blow-drying is required, always use thermal protection. It is best to use a cool air flow as it can close the hair cuticle, smoothen the hair and leave it shiny. And always dry in the direction of hair growth!
  6. Hair ends dry out and are damaged the fastest. Rub in a protective serum or natural oil every day to keep them from splitting. This will keep your hair healthy and supple and less frizzy.

Taking care of porous hair is an endless struggle not only with dryness and imperfect appearance, but also so that the hair does not lose either moisture or nutrition.

  1. Keratin is a natural component of hair that is responsible for filling in gaps in damaged hair structures. Great for porous hair, it improves the elasticity and resistance of the hair to aggressive external factors.
  2. Proteins - Milk, silk, wheat, soy and collagen. They protect hair from deterioration and also fill in gaps in all hair structures.
  3. Light silicones - go like emollients.
  4. Moisturizers that should be used in moderation are glycerin, honey, urea, sodium lactate, fructose, aloe, hyaluronic acid.
  5. Emollients are oils and waxes such as lanolin.

Natural oils for porous hair care

Many natural base oils can not only correct the internal structure of the hair and strengthen the hair follicles, but also enhance the shine of the hair, make it more elastic and manageable.

The oils contain beneficial essential fatty acids, phytosterols, flavonoids, carotenes, squalane, as well as a set of vitamins and micronutrients that guarantee perfect hair care.

Best oils for porous hair:

  • Argan oil
  • Olive oil
  • Sesame oil
  • Camellia oil
  • Linseed oil
  • Grape seed oil
  • Jojoba oil

It is also worth remembering that small molecule saturated fatty acids such as coconut oil or shea butter are not good for hair with high porosity. The reason is that these oils cannot keep the hair hydrated.

Oil in home care is very easy to use: apply a slightly warm oil to damp hair and scalp, gently massage the scalp, warm to enhance the effect of the oil. Also oils can be added to masks.
